Australia routes to Latin America

Strengthening ties between Australia and Latin America is not only a matter of flights or distances, but of strategic vision.

Bilateral trade has shown sustained growth, but it still has enormous potential to realise. Australian foreign direct investment in Latin America exceeds A$6.3 billion, distributed across key sectors such as agriculture (A$1.5 billion), energy and minerals (A$668 million), essential manufactured goods (A$2.7 billion) and services (A$1.1 billion).

Australia is a safe and stable destination to invest, with the 13th largest economy in the world, a highly qualified workforce and a transparent legal, political and economic environment.

Australia is increasingly attractive to Latin Americans, not only as a study destination, but also to live, work and invest. The Latino community in Australia continues to grow, bringing diversity, dynamism and talent. In addition, education is one of the strongest bridges between the two regions. More than 30,000 Latin American students choose Australia every year to train, generating lasting and valuable links between both continents. This migratory and student flow strengthens cultural ties, encourages bilingualism and creates human bridges that sustain long-term relationships.

Australia can play a key role as a bridge between Asia and Latin America, expanding its influence in both hemispheres. A greater connection with Latin America helps to diversify alliances and reduces dependence on traditional relations in the northern hemisphere. This opening also allows Latin America to look towards the Asia-Pacific region more easily, using Australia as a strategic entry point.

Currently, air connections between Latin America and Oceania are very limited, despite the growing demand. LATAM has successfully reactivated its Sydney-Santiago route, recording a 34% increase in Australian travel to South America in the last year. These routes, which line Antarctica using long-range technology (ETOPS), show that connectivity is possible and safe.

Recovering and expanding the routes offered by airlines such as Qantas and Air New Zealand before the pandemic would be key to promoting trade, tourism and investment.

As conclusion, Australia and Latin America have all the elements to strengthen a mutually beneficial relationship: economic complementarity, cultural affinity and growing human connectivity. Betting on more direct flights, greater reciprocal investment and a more robust educational and cultural exchange is not only an opportunity, but a strategic step to consolidate Australia as a global actor with a broad, inclusive and adaptive vision.
